Mob griefing=false conflicts with villagers

Recently we had a request to change the game rule on the server to disable mob griefing- basically preventing creepers, endermen and ghasts from doing damage to blocks- they still attack and do damage to players, but not blocks.

However, we've discovered that when it's disabled, villagers no longer plant or harvest crops.

My question to you lovely folks is this: Should we re-enable mob griefing so villagers can plant and harvest (and therefore reproduce), or leave it disabled?

I would be up for reapplying but I was still going to make sure that I've spider-proofed and then put in golems for anything that needs to be protected whether the griefing was on or not.

The original request came from Cuspar, who would, I imagine, like to protect his amazing structures, including the Waterfall house, from random creeper attacks.

With villagers, it is possible to manually "feed" them by trading food to them, which will cause them to become "willing".

The reason the mob griefing rule affects villager breeding and farming is that they can't pick things up if mob griefing is disabled. So they can't harvest, and if you throw stuff at them they can't pick it up.

+1 Creeper explosions, especially when they destroy hard to find blocks, are not fun.

2 days before the creeper greifing was turned off, 1 jumped down the hole I was working in and blew up about a half days worth of work on my chicken farm and mine cart peze dispenser and it's related wiring. /such is life in the game. Prior to that I had walled and light my town and have not had much grief in a long while, although Rtech had some in the village, which then he repaired as best he cool (Thank you Rtech) .

I am for turning it back on as trading and farming is an important part of my village economy (And I am a lazy bastard and do not want to farm myself)

planting crops by hand probably does affect Maizan more than than creeper blowing my stuff up.

Sent Cusp a PM to ask him to weigh in.

Quick question: For those worried about creepers and static structures, have you considered using cats? Creepers avoid them, so if you tame a few cats and get them to park it around your buildings, creepers won't approach them- it's a thought, anyway.

My reasons are selfish so I can live with turning it back on. I'm building something new and big across the bay from Fallingwater so damage at the house isn't a huge issue. My new structure uses a lot of snow though, but I'll just remove the path to the shore and make it swim access.

I'll re-enable the game rule for mob griefing this evening. Cusp, let me know if you want some cats.

I'm tempted to set a big portion of the jungle on fire so I can see the cats easier...but that would probably burn the cats in the process., Win-Win ? :shifty:

The Mesa Fishmonger hut (next to the portal) has 35 full stacks of fish. That should be plenty

By the way, I found out last night that I had made a mistake when re-enabling mob griefing, and it was in fact still off. It is now definitively ON. :)

Are you sure. The farmers were farming as of when you first set it.

Nah, I think Bulwark's fine; we've had mob griefing on for almost the entire life of the server. I prefer it on myself; it adds some spice to things.
