POLL: To upgrade or not to upgrade, that is the question

Post by Jimer Lins » Sun Mar 29, 2015 3:41 pm

OK, folks- Maizan has very generously donated a bit of funds to keep the server going, and it's enough to upgrade to the next tier of host specifications for a couple of months, OR to keep the server going for four months at its current state outright.

My question to you, the denizens of Rivendell, is this: do we want to upgrade the server to a higher performance tier? Our current plan costs $15 per month for a small CentOS box with 2 GB of RAM and 40GB of hard drive space. The next tier up adds 2 more GB of RAM and some more hard drive space, as well as puts us on the latest CentOS version (I think we're on 5 now), and costs $35 per month. I can't sustain that on my own, but if people are willing to chip in at a slightly higher rate, we can afford it.

If we do upgrade we can expect less lag, smoother performance and better stability. We'll also be able to better handle more players and we've been slowly adding cool people over time, which is awesome.

So, we come to it! Register your preference with this handy-dandy poll and let's decide! :)

It seems to be running smoothly enough.

I vote to upgrade. But go with the flow.

For the most part the current tier should be just fine for a vanila server. Unless people are doing some extra crazy things, in which case adding more server capacity might temporarily help but could still end up with issues as that just means the crazy gets to be bigger before its an issue. That or we get more people consistently playing as more of the game world active at the same time, especial if each one is doing some item intensive things, like lots of animals or villagers.

I just don't want Jimer to get stuck on that option when we stop playing again in a few months :shifty:

Well, if we all stop playing I'll simply pull a backup image of the server and shut it down until we're interested again. The best thing about this host (Vultr) is that they only charge you for hosts you're actually using. I can spin up new ones and spin down old ones any time.

Looks like we're trending toward neutral to negative at the moment.

Let's table the option for now and revisit it in a month or two, sound good?
