So, I read his post twice, but I'm not I follow what the command blocks are doing. I understand the "lets build a minecraft world that looks like Zelda", but is the lab just tracking which screen the player is in and then teleporting him to the correct dungeon? Looks like overkill for that.

I read up some more on it- the command blocks system is scanning all the areas of the world and only activating screens that players are on- so when you walk into a screen, the monsters spawn, the doors do what they should, etc. This means it's not running the whole world at once.
Also, they have a start, run and stop/reset system. It's not completed, they apparently have a long way to go but it's very cool.
