I've been following the snapshots of Minecraft and I'm going to update the server to 1.8.1 in a few minutes. If it causes any problems I'll roll it back, but I don't anticipate any. The reason I'm doing this ahead of an "official" release is that there's a lot of good fixes in the 3 snapshots released in the last month or so, and I think we'll see some nice perf improvements.

Re: Updating server to 1.8.1 pre3
Update Completed!
The server is now running on Server 1.8 pre3. You don't have to do anything special to use it, but if you want to update your client to the latest snapshot, it should give some performance improvements for you.
To do that, start the Minecraft Launcher and either create a new profile or edit your existing one. On the profile properties page, set these options:
Once you do that and press "Play", it will download the latest prerelease JAR file and you're off to the races. Again, this isn't required; you can still use the 1.8 release client with no problems as far as I can see, but there are perf improvements in both the client and the server.

Let me know if there's any trouble!
