Blackferne Tower Spider Infestation

I'm in the process of building Blackferne Tower on the SW part of town near Whitey's Sandstone complex and the public wheat/carrot/sugarcane field. I've started building basements (mostly to get cobblestone to make the tower rise in height, and I came across a spider spawner. I've got a few torches on it currently, but I know that a spider spawner is also a great opportunity to either make a mob farm for XP or a farm for string. I didn't have time this morning to start the process either way, and wanted to get input before building one type of trap or the other.

So:

Option 1:
Collect the spiders in a shaft with an XP gathering killing hole?

Option 2:
alllow them to spawn to fall into a drowning trap of sorts to gather string and not worry about XP?

Option 3:
Keep the torches on the spawner, spiders are gross.

I vote for option 2. Spiders are a bit harder to XP farm than zombies, and there is a zombie spawner across the river from Jimer's tower. If I have time this evening, I'll work on turning that one into an XP farm.

I can't remember if I told you guys this story but I got Zoe some minecraft books off amazon and one day we are playing on a server her PC is running and she calls me over and says to look in the chest she made. It was a trap that had me fall into lava.
