It probably doesn't need to be restated, but just in case, remember not to damage other people's stuff. if you want to set traps and so on, that's fine as long as it's within your own places/areas, and that people are warned by signs that it's a dangerous area.

And please don't deliberately corrupt the portal DB. I'll have to clean it up with an upgrade, but the less I have to clean up the better. :)

Full disclosure:

Since starting on this server I have "chickened" many people, made a snowball launching trap on whitey, made a giant endstone "moon man" on Bulwark's house, made iron golems in whitey's house and snow and iron golems and chickens in Bul's soccer stadium.

The "plan" for castle greyskull is to be a dangerous place. There will be signs advising people of the danger and that they should turn back and go away. It is a good ways away from town (not nearly as far as lego castle) so people purposely have to seek it out.

The skull is now 11/61 levels complete. On the dynamic map you can see the jaw bone taking shape.

I have an insane (and probably really stupid) question.

How long do you think it would take to recreate some of the major points of interest from SWG in Minecraft? Assuming we had Creative mode and some tools available to us?

I think it depends on what you intend to build. If it is a scale model of Theed or Coronet that would take a while. Something smaller like the Spaceport on Lok would take less time.

If we did this I'd like to take it in small chunks but try for all of the major areas. I'd set up a separate server or something in Creative mode so we could just go to town. Maybe start with Anchorhead. :)

I got around to loading up minecraft again and got the 1.8 download.
Would it be possible to get 1.8 onto the rivendale server?

Please and thank you.

I would love to, but Bukkit has announced that it's not going to be updating to 1.8 and then there was a tiff between Bukkit and Mojang about ownership. Then yesterday it's announced that Microsoft is buying Mojang. :(

I'm not sure where things stand with regard to 1.8, but unless Mojang picks up the gauntlet for Bukkit, it's dead and the version we're on is the last one.

So that opens up questions about what we do moving forward. I'm going to keep an eye on the prospects of Bukkit remaining viable, and see what alternatives are available.

And it gets better- a giant drama bomb apparently exploded on the Bukkit project, the team lead was removed by Mojang and now he's insisting Mojang can't use his code....

And the entire Bukkit dev and forum staff have resigned en masse.

Update- there's a new mod project called "Sponge" that's arising from the ashes of Bukkit (sort of). It's in the early stages but looks to be a great replacement for bukkit. I'm following development closely.

I think the server might be down.

Looks like the hosting provider is down. I actually just pulled yesterday's backups earlier this morning. I can't access the hosting provider's website either.

Thanks! So far it's only had one glitch, but I stopped using it for multiple stacks of the same thing just in case. I was going to put a railway in but the horse just ended up being the most practical.

Server's back up; it was never actually offline, just the hosting provider was out for some reason.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread

Post by Jimer Lins » Thu Sep 18, 2014 7:46 pm

OK, so here's the situation as I see it: We won't be getting 1.8 support for a good while, and moving the plugins we use to a new platform (Sponge) will take even longer. We're kind of in a cul-de-sac with regard to the current server platform, at least for a while. Essentially, Bukkit is dead, as are any plugins developed against it (like Essentials, my teleport and tough boats plugins and much more). It's a good bet that support WILL reappear for these but it's very unclear when or what form it will take.

So, with that said, I'd like to lay out some options we can take with the server for your consideration:

Option 1- A Fresh Start

Option 1 means we take the current Minecraft server and archive it. I would shut it down, take a backup and then flatten it. We would replace it with a brand-new 1.8 server using Vanilla Minecraft. No plugins, no special game modes, nothing. Here's what it would be:

* Survival.
* Mob griefing (creepers, ghasts, etc) would be ON. Creepers would blow up your stuff.
* No transportation or teleportation. You'd have to go the long way around to everything.
* I would not use operator powers to do anything (I currently use them to build stuff like the post office, etc).

Pros: This would be an interesting option and could be a lot of fun, starting from total scratch in a brand new world with a much harder ruleset. It would make things like trains/minecarts, roads and other infrastructure very valuable to get from place to place.

Cons: We wouldn't be able to play with our current creations, but they'd still exist in stasis, backed up for us.

Option 2- Hybrid

Under this scenario, I would reduce the memory footprint of the current server, delete all the dynmap data (it takes up a LOT of disk space) and essentially make it a second-class citizen. We would then spin up a new server like in option 1, on the same host, but using a different port. Then we could use either server, although the old/current server would be slow and probably pretty laggy. It might also impact the new server, because resources on the host are limited.

I don't like this option from a technical/practical perspective, because our resources are already limited.

Option 3- Status Quo

Under this scenario, we do nothing, and keep things as they are. No new server and we just muddle along until update support becomes available.

Of these three options I will confess a desire to try option 1. I think it would be fun to start fresh and not have all the conveniences of the teleportation and magic transportation we've had, and make it more hardscrabble. But I can fully understand if people don't want to put the current server to bed, even if it is only for a time.

Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? :)
