I can get behind option 1. There is a lot of neat things in 1.8 (Zoe and I have been doing stuff on our LAN). We could build a proper large fortified town and go from there.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
I would vote for 1. Something I would suggest if mobs can destroy things, is before starting the new server setting up some guidelines to help keep repair costs down, especially if we have sections of the wild in between places that rail will be used to get to.
My personal rules for rail was to make a platform at least three wide to allow for the possibility of have two lines for both directions and have it at least three squares above the ground, though for horses may want to raise that. In areas where I couldn't or would be a lot more difficult then it would be worth would be to have fencing that was tall enough to include an over hang to prevent spiders from being on the rail. Placing enough torches to ensure mobs wouldn't spawn on the rail.
Not saying my idea has to be used since if the change happens here real soon with Destiny not sure if I would get much of any play time in for the foreseeable future.

I'd like to hear from Bulwark and Cuspar also- are there any other regular players I'm missing?

Righty-ho, thanks. Bulwark, Cuspar and Whitey then.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
I haven't been playing all, but I'd hate to see everyone's work disappear. Can we not keep that world alive AND have a start over for those that want it? I couldn't care less personally about any new features.
That being said, if you kill it or not, I would really backups of Fallingwater and Netherrobie to import into my own creative mode game.
Edit: Wait. That's option 2.
So actually - can you give me backups of my houses that I can import into my own game? If so, go ahead with option 1. I can't see much MC in my foreseeable future.

Nobody's work would disappear; I'd keep backups of the server, and even make them available to anyone who wanted them. Bukkit is no longer available for download but I'd also provide the server jars if you wanted. Alternatively I could see about getting the servers to run side by side if there's enough interest in both, or we can stay with what we have.Cuspar wrote:I haven't been playing all, but I'd hate to see everyone's work disappear. I'll admit to being interested in the new features of 1.8 (it was truly a MAJOR rewrite and added a ton of new and revised functionality), but also in a new experience- a more traditional one with less teleporting and popping about, and more reliance on "traditional" transportation methods and suchlike. It would make adventuring more adventuresome.
And there's something appealing about a brand-new world, but that's probably just me.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
For what it's worth, option 2 isn't really viable unless we pay more money for a new host or more memory. I tried paring down the memory footprint but it's just not happening, so we either stick with status quo or start a new 1.8 server.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
Aw, I've been playing more lately actually working on my tardis. I would love to get a copy. Even though I will miss it, it is hard to see a future there so I will go along with whatever. A new world sounds fun.

In all seriousness, I want to do what maximizes fun. If we want to stay with what we have that's cool. i just wanted to make sure everyone knew what the situation was wrt updates.

Fair 'nuff. I'd still like to get the opinion of our resident master builder and Ghast-Wrangler.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
No- those are all provided by the Bukkit plugin Essentials. This would be a flat vanilla Minecraft server, no mods or plugins. Right now unless we want to force everyone to use Forge (and all the extra work that comes along with modding your own Minecraft client), we're kind of stuck in that department, because with the death of Bukkit, there really isn't anything comparable that didn't itself depend on Bukkit.Maizan wrote:So will there be commands like /home /spawn /recipe?

I think this could rejuvenate the server, I never see anyone on anymore. I will miss my giant sorter though.Jimer Lins wrote:In all seriousness, I want to do what maximizes fun. I've been absent a lot lately, because I've been dealing with a lot of workload issues. However, I'd like to get back into things and I agree that a new server could help that. But I don't want to just drive people away who are more invested in their stuff, hence this discussion.

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
I'm not a fan of option 1. We've spent a lot of time making neat things on the server and I'd hate to see them collecting dust in the closet. Could we make a new server from scratch and just import some of the more interesting chunks from the old server? like, just a few 1000 blocks form the center of town?

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
You know, that's probably doable. I'd have to check with respect to the chunk format, but I *think* so. The problem would be that if we locate stuff a good distance away it would take a long time to get there, and none of the teleporters would work.
I'll play around with this and see if I can make a hybrid world that contains stuff from our current one. That opens the question of what comes along, of course- Bulwark's funland? other stuff?

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
I'm tinkering around with stuff- I initially thought to export the entire town, but now I think I might just export funland and Cuspar's Fallingwater house, then bring just those into the new server. Our "central" area was REALLY big, and had a ton of stuff in it, and it wouldn't really be starting fresh. However, just bringing in the funland stuff would be cool if it was a moderate distance (short walk) from spawn.
Thoughts?

Re: Minecraft Server Thread
The Current Plan
After running some tests and playing around with a 1.8 server on my home box, here's what I've discovered:
* I can import chunks from our old world to a new one.
* Terrain generation's a lot different.
* Our old world used large biomes (LARGEBIOMES=TRUE), the new one will use default sizes.
I had originally thought to move the entire town, but after seeing what new terrain looks like and that there's so very many new resources (there's a LOT of new blocks), I don't want to create sterile chunks that don't have all the new goodies in them. Also, if we "fork" the town now, going back to the original server later will be problematic. Also, importing large chunks of chunks is a lot harder than dealing with smaller ones (matching terrain height and such).
With that in mind, here's what I'm going to do:
* Build a new 1.8 server world that has a decent spawn area and interesting terrain.
* Export the chunks containing Funland and Fallingwater.
* Import the chunks containing Funland and Fallingwater to the new world, at a moderate distance from spawn (I'll tell you the coordinates).
* Flatten all chunks except the ones I imported, thereby making the new world TOTALLY new, even for me.
* Move the new world to the server and fire it up.
I'll also make the server backups I took this morning and the Bukkit jar files available. You can use the server backups and MCEdit to pull any chunks you want out to play with on your own, or even run the server standalone .

Working on the server now, I should have it up within a bit. Nobody can access it but me for the moment.
I've preserved both Funland and Fallingwater.
