Minecraft Server Thread

Post by Jimer Lins » Fri Mar 07, 2014 3:36 pm

Since we've garnered some interest in playing and several people have already jumped in to the MC server I've been running (yay!), I thought I'd start a new thread for keeping track of requests, problems, and updates- like when I'm going to be shutting it down for maintenance, that kind of thing.

General Info

Hours

The server should be running 24/7. If it's down, email me or ping me via Google chat/Facebook/phone and I'll check it out ASAP.

We're running with a modified vanilla experience- mob griefing is off so creeper explosions hurt you, but don't break blocks, and I've added some plugins to reduce the focus on some of the harsher elements of Minecraft, while still keeping an element of risk. So you can use the /back command to return to your death point and gather your gear (assuming you didn't die in lava, anyway), you can use the /home command to go home and save travel time, stuff like that.

Platform

The server is hosted on a VPS (Virtual Private Server) that I pay a monthly fee for. It's running on CentOS (Linux) and I have full access to the system. The server is virtualized, but we're not on a control panel setup where we can't access root.

The server platform is Bukkit, which is a Minecraft server mod that allows you to run a general Minecraft server with a nice, consistent plugin API. Because they have to update after Mojang does, they usually lag a couple of versions. For example, they're on 1.7.3 while Mojang has put out 1.7.5. But I try to keep it on the bleeding edge by reviewing the pre-release updates and updating the server frequently.

Backups and Rollback Support

The server is backing up every 30 minutes or so to an incremental/daily/weekly system. If someone has some space to offer for offsite daily backups via FTP or SCP, I'd love you long time. It's a vulnerablity that if the server tanks and we can't recover it, we could lose backups also. I currently copy them off when I think of it, but it's not automated.

We're also running LogBlock, which logs every change made. That's an experiment on my part but if something goes horribly wrong I can in theory roll back the changes.

Plugins

We're running the following plugins at the moment:

* ToughBoats (makes boats not break easily, my own plugin)
* Essentials (provides general server support, teleport and warp commands, utility functions, and is quite useful)
* TreeFeller (if you use an axe on a tree, it should cut down everything above it. you may have to crouch to do that. Makes cutting down trees faster)
* SecureChests (lets you lock chests, doors and other objects with a container. Uses the /sc lock and /sc unlock commands).
* WorldGuard (protection/antigriefing plugin)
* Gringotts (economy plugin, uses emeralds as the exchange medium. I hope we can make a vibrant economy on the server with this as the basis)

Rules and Access

The server is intended to be kid-friendly. My kids and some of their friends join us, and at least one Alvian's kid plays on the server also. So that's kind of the big thing- watch your language as much as you can. We're also generally co-op, so there's no griefing or non-consensual PVP.

Specific rules:

* No breaking people's structures or stealing their stuff, etc.
* Don't build abusively (phallic statues in someone's yard, building right in front of someone's house, that kind of thing).
* In community areas, try to follow the planned layout if there is one.
* Feel free to PVP or build traps if you 1) have agreed to it, and 2) such things are CLEARLY marked and not in a shared area.

The server is whitelisted, so no one I haven't added to the access list can play. If you have someone you think would be a good candidate to join us, let me know. Only mature people who will play within both the letter and spirit of the rules should be considered. I'll let you vouch for new players, but make sure you're certain they won't be disruptive. :)

If you have suggestions, requests or problems, post them in this thread! I'm excited to have the server seeing some activity. :)

I've crafted some tracks...I was originally going to build a rollercoaster but that may not be in the cards for awhile. You're welcome to them.

In the meantime, I have crafted my waterfall from nowhere, flowing right into my garden.

Jimer do you run anything that will make a map to see what's been explored/built etc? I was using Minecraft Overviewer for my single player world.

Maintenance was delayed. I did have a mapper for a while but it was buggy and kept crashing the server. If they've stabilized it I would put it back on.

I have tons of iron. It comes from my iron farm. If anyone is willing to trade nether quartz for it I would make you a great deal on it. I'll be happy to let you have some in any case.

Sorry, I wasn't feeling well this afternoon so I was napping. Since no one's on the server right now I'll be taking it down for a bit to back it up and update plugins.

Server is backed up and back up!

Changes/Updates

* Changed backup frequency from 30 minutes to every 12 hours. I may adjust this again, but too frequent updates makes it fill up disk space.
* Updated Essentials to latest release version (2.12.1)
* Updated WorldGuard to latest version.
* Updated WorldEdit to latest version.
* Updated TreeFeller to latest version.

Use an axe on a tree and crouch while you're doing it, and it should take down all the logs above the one you cut. Handy.

Did another quick restart to add the economy plugins I've been wanting to put on for a while now. I'll put up a tutorial in a bit on how to use the new economy, set up shops, and access your wallet!

Now With Capitalism!

Ok, I finally got around to installing the economy and shop plugins I wanted to. One of the problems with Minecraft economy plugins that I've seen is that most are based on a fiat currency- just adding a thing that says "you have X dollars". But I like game economies to be tied to something.

Enter Gringotts. This is an item-based economy plugin for Bukkit that lets you use Emeralds as currency. Emeralds are objects you can move around, find and trade for from villagers. If we had PVP or raiding, they're also able to be stolen. Since we don't that doesn't matter much. However, it also means you can do direct or indirect trades, via a second plugin called "Vault".

Vault is a plugin that manages the economy- essentially it tracks how much money (emeralds) you have, and lets you spend it without having to carry a giant stack of emeralds (money) around with you, and Gringotts uses Vault to manage the currency.

So... how does this affect YOU?

Glad you asked.

Your Vault

First, you should make a vault for yourself. To do that, you'll want to make a chest, place it somewhere safe, and then put a sign on the chest (not in front of it, ON the chest). The sign should read "[Vault]"- NOTHING ELSE. If you did it right you'll see a message that says a vault was created for you.

That chest is now your vault and will contain your money. PROTECT IT. First, use the command "/sc lock" to lock and protect it. That way, no one can steal from you.

When you sell something via a shop (see below) or get money from another player via commands, that money (in the form of Emeralds) will be added to your vault. This is automatic and transparent; you can take emeralds out of your vault and put them in manually if you like also.

I will start everyone with 200 emeralds, but you'll have to create your vault first, then I'll credit your account. This is to jump-start the economy, and get people buying and selling.

Shops! Hooray Capitalism

This is my favorite part of the new plugins- you can now run your own shop. There's a couple of Youtube videos here: http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/shops/ which describe very simply how to create a shop that you can buy or sell with, using Emeralds as currency.

Near my tower, for example, I have a shop that sells health potions, regeneration potions, fire resistance potions (want to go swimming in lava?), and iron (for STUPID cheap prices at the moment). I'm also BUYING redstone.

If you have goodies you want to sell, set up a shop. If you have goodies you NEED, set up a shop and tell people about it.

Warps

If you set up a shop or have a point of interest that you'd like people to be able to get to, let me know and I can set up a warp point for it. You can get to my store by using /warp CyclomethStore, for example.

Let me know if you have questions!

Shop Gotchas

A couple of things to note about shops:

* Place the sign for the shop IN FRONT OF, not on the chest. This is contrast to how you make a vault.
* To buy or sell items, hit the SIGN, not the chest.
* Once a chest has been set up as a shop, you'll have to hit the sign with the item you want to buy or sell. That means you need at least one of what you want if you're buying.

Also, I'd like to encourage people to refer other players that they believe would enjoy the server and would contribute positively to the atmosphere on it. My plan all along has been to grow the server slowly and deliberately, and this seems like a great start.

Heh.

Joking aside, it's great to be able to buy and sell stuff while you're not online, and to run your own shop if you want. The way the plugin works you can go as simple as a couple of chests outside your house with what you're looking to buy or sell, or set up a frickin' mall.

Book and Quills at the Post Office

If you want to write a letter to someone who's offline, you can get a Book and Quill at the Post Office, near the stairs. I set up a shop there selling them for 1 emerald each. If you haven't used them before, here's the Minecraft Wiki article on it:

http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Book_and_Quill

Basically you can write in it, sign it and drop it into someone's hopper. They'll be able to get it and read it when they're online next, assuming they check the post office.

Using SecureChests

The server has a plugin called "SecureChests" (http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/secure-chests/), that has a bunch of commands you can use to lock, unlock and manage access to your chests, doors and other containers. You can lock, unlock, and add other people to the access list for a container.

Lockable items include: Chests, Ender Chests, Furnaces, Doors, Trapdoors, and so on. See that link above for a complete list of commands.

Dynmap

I'm planning to add Dynmap back to the server this evening or maybe tomorrow morning. It shouldn't take long to get it in place. Once it's done we'll have a dynamically updated real-time map via the website.

I did this once before and it caused some problems with space as well as conflicting with the backup system, so hopefully we can avoid that with the recent changes to dynmap.
