The new Doctor
I like it. Going to watch the premier again tonight in theaters since some friends don't have cable.

Re: The new Doctor
It's weird but I have never seen a single episode of Doctor Who- not the old or any of the new series.
I keep thinking I should watch some but I don't know where I would start- and then I think of how much time I'd lose trying to catch up on everything and then I just give it up as a bad idea.

A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening tear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn. - Edmund Blackadder

I'm seeing this tonight!
Jimer, just start with the 9th doctor on Netflix, it doesn't take long to get caught up.

Re: The new Doctor
Yeah, start with the 9th. All the episodes leading to the 8th season are in netflix. I tried watching the older episodes, but they are just awful.

I know some people who would consider them fighting words.Dashl wrote:Yeah, start with the 9th. All the episodes leading to the 8th season are in netflix. I tried watching the older episodes, but they are just awful.
I am not one of them.
Jimer you can start with 9th doctor and watch at your leisure. It gets progressively better as it goes on. It is british so you know that the tv seasons are shorter AND your kids are the right age to watch it with them.
I'm extremely pumped about Capaldi taking the helm, and can't wait to see it. Though Tennent will always be my doctor I imagine.

Re: The new Doctor
First one wasn't my favorite beginning for a new Doctor but looking forward to them going back to less series story arcs and more episode focus, though I wonder how long that statement will hold true with the minor introduction to Missy.
Re: The new Doctor
I will admit, I hoped Capaldi's Doctor would turn into Malcolm Tucker.

Malcom Tucker was amazing. Here he is describing a well known and beloved franchise dear to all of our hearts.

It will be interesting to see him not as the Cardinal from Musketeers. I don't recall BBC using a single actor in 2 series at once (other than documentaries).
Re: The new Doctor
I'm in Jimer's shoes here too.
But I guess I'll start watching this. So fuck you guys again.

I can't do it. Watched half of the first episode two nights ago. Tried to finish it today. Just too cheesy and low budget for me, even if it improves as much as Dashl says it does.

Re: The new Doctor
Get through the first season and you'll be fine. The first season was kind of a test to see how it would be received after its 16 year hiatus. When they saw it was a hit they swapped out doctors and increased production value.Cuspar wrote:I can't do it. Watched half of the first episode two nights ago. Tried to finish it today. Re: The new Doctor
Like The Walking Dead Season 2, fight through it, (season 1 of DW is very important) and then it gets really good. If it helps Cuspar, we can sync up on Netflix and text through the insane stuff like we did with Walking Dead and Breaking Bad.
Re: The new Doctor
If I remember right, it gets better with every episode in the first season, though still plenty moments of low budget cheese.

Re: The new Doctor
The Slitheen episodes were pretty bad on effects. The BBC America specials on each doctor last year talked about that one, that they had two different companies doing the work, some cgi and some actual costumes.
Everything I have read about the BBC is that they are very cheap on their shows, and paying the actors. They also work insane hours compared to American shows. I do they they are much better than the crap we churn out here.

Re: The new Doctor
What is that Dashl, we should have a weekly/bi weekly doctor who night where we synchronize up on netflix and watch Doctor Who? We can do it as a guild and have an episode discussion thread to talk about it? I think that is a great idea and am glad you've decided to spearhead that!

If you can't watch Doctor Who, we can't be friends.
As for the newest season, can someone fucking kill Steven Moffat already? He already tried to turn Sherlock into "Non-Time Travel Doctor Who" last season and this season premier was so shittily written that I had to listen to Mrs. Dood repeatedly mutter "UGH" while rolling her eyes so hard that it created a breeze.
Capaldi was the only saving grace of that episode. He's going to be a great Doctor. He's got the chops. Moffat has lost his damn mind though. The last season and a half plus this proved that to me.
