"Ah, when I was a boy, you ask? I haven't thought of those days in quite some time. But that was long before I decided to follow Kord. I guess you could say I wasn't drawn to warriors life so much as I was forced into it. My path at the time was a simple one, I was putting one foot in front of the other trying search for my human father. I was just trying to earn some coin to keep funding my search when Kord picked me as his champion." Syric says proudly.

"Kord has picked you as his champion?A gentle chuckle"We are all servants to Kord, to be his Champion though you must emerge victorious and dominant in battle. And..." he pauses as if he finally understands, "...THAT is why you seek to obtain more power. You seek to fulfill your destiny and obliterate evil in combat and achieve the glory of Kord's blessing. Once again I will champion the virtue of wisdom. What separates a bar room brawler from a soldier is training. The brawler learned how to swing his fist and knock out the drunk. Strength and courage will accomplish that in adequate measure. But the soldier is a student before his first battle. He needs to learn his weapon, his place in the line, how to support his allies and flank his enemies. A brawler can become a soldier, but when he does if he truly becomes a soldier, even in a bar fight he will never be a brawler again. But soldiers are plentiful. And what you seek is beyond what a mere soldier would be capable of. What you seek requires you to no longer be the student of war, but to become first a teacher, then a teacher of teachers, a Master of war! That requires patience. You need to study yourself. Study how you swing the blade, how you hold the shield, how you step and slide. You must study yourself. Then you must study others with the same passion, study their movements, strengths, vulnerabilities, fluidity, and their rigidness. Then you must study yourself once more, but with the dedication of the sculptor. Remake yourself into the shape of the weapon they fear most. Sometimes that will be simply buttressing your strengths, but just as often that will be adjusting your attacks specifically to their weaknesses. A careful, patient, but deadly prick from the thorn of the plant that grows from your wisdom. That is what I would suggest after providing counsel to warriors for longer than you have been alive." He says sliding a plate of cookies over to you.

Syric will take a cookie as he replies, "but how do I gain this wisdom quickly? I admit that I do not have much of formal training, but I learn fast. "

"Wisdom is not something gained quickly. It comes from introspection and reflection. One way is to take on a pupil. By seeing yourself in the pupil, you will see where you need to improve and by helping them, you can help yourself for you must truly understand battle in order to teach it." the priest says.

Any hope on Syric's face has turned and changed to discouragement, "A pupil?"

Another nibble on the cookie.

"Look, I won't argue your logic, my mother used to say something similar, but I can't teach what it is I have", a sly grin spreading across his face as he continues, "I'm just a special kinda guy. There's just something about me where things work out the way I want...usually, he punctuates with a shrug. whether that meant inspiring an ally to push through the pain and keep on fighting or getting inside an enemy's head and tripping them up, either you got it or you don't....and I got it."

Another nibble, "The cookies are nice, by the way"

"What I need to get better at is swordsmanship. I thought I knew how to handle this thing, it reminds me of my first sword, a greatsword left by my father...then there was the lightning forged greatsword, that Kord surely led me to, which only furthered my assumption that I was meant to be a great warrior and not just a lucky fighter."

"What are in these things?" nibble, nibble.

"Anyway, there was also this longsword I had, oh it feels like a lifetime ago, and I liked how it handled but it just didn't seem to be as effective."

"The cookies have a touch of honey in them. It pairs with a spice that the kitchen mother won't tell me where she gets, but is amazing." He pauses scratching his beard. "So you think that you still have stuff to learn? Maybe you still think yourself a pupil yourself. Let me tell you the story of Asotch. Asotch was a boy from a house of meager means. His father ran a small food cart in a large town and every day Asotch would spend his days watching the city guard doing drills and preparing for war. He was engrossed by this and he and his friends would go to the creek and use fallen branches as swords in their imaginary battles against the enemies. Asotch was a natural talent. The time spent watching the guard practice has imprinted upon him some very subtle methods which made him seem unusually lucky to his friends. And Asotch even believed he was mere lucky.

But time passed and he eventually joined the guard. He was hungry to learn and become a great warrior, much like you. And his commanding officers quickly saw his talent. A short time later the town's enemies were amassed outside the gates and a heroic battle was fought and Asotch was a tavern legend soon enough. When things settled down and the enemies had retreated to lick their wounds, his commanders asked him to train the newest recruits. Asotch scoffed at the idea. He said to his teacher, 'Master you still know so much, and I am just a lucky fighter with no skill!' His master took Asotch to the garden in the center of town. An older man was playing a game of rooks against another on the other side of the garden. Asotch and his master began to talk, 'Asotch who is the greatest warrior in this garden?' Asotch replied 'You master. That is why I implore you to teach me all you know.' The Master replied 'Flattering, but incorrect. Do you see that man playing rooks? He is the greatest warrior in this garden. In much the same way you yearn to be taught by me, I yearn to be taught by him. Think back to our battles. Think about the assignments I gave you. I told you which wall to defend. That man told us commanders which side of the city to defend. Much like you command your sword, I control platoons. He controls armies. One day he will pass as we all must, and I will hopefully know enough to fill his shoes. But it would improper of me to do so until I knew someone could fill mine. When it comes to swords you have talent surpassing your peers. Every barkeep in town will say so. But the next evolution in your path is how to control other's swords. Be it your enemies or your allies. Much like I am your master, that man is mine. And the chain must be extended with you becoming the master for another. A pupil forces us to teach ourselves so we can teach another.' Asotch finally understood."

"But if you are simply seeking sword play I may have just the man."

"Yes. Who is more mighty? The man with a sword, or the man with a thousand swords? But to control an army you must be able to teach and lead them. See their flaws and correct them. And in doing so you should see your own flaws, and correct them." The priest says smiling.

"Unless I am mistaken, neither is a god yet. And as you are Kord's champion I think you'll be in a good position to fight them. But look outside. The field is filled not with Orcus directly but with his followers. Your forces will deal with them, while you, the champion, can deal with Orcus directly. What sort of expansion in knowledge do you seek?" He says pouring a second cup of tea.

[ooc - sorry I haven't responded sooner, between my vacation and me losing my job my mind has been on other stuff lately...]

Tony will look for a table with some room at it and a group that looks like they would welcome someone joining them then walk over...

"Evening lads, looks like you have room for one more, mind if Tony Plush joins you?"

Assuming they let me in Tony is going to try to lift their spirits a bit with a story...

"Thank you gentlemen. Tony Plush is the name, scouting and adventuring is the game. Currently attached to the Phoenix Guard on a mission from Waterdeep to establish a gateway between here and there. Looking around here there seems to be a lack of fresh faced lasses...then again they always seem to be trouble too. Why Tony Plush remembers this one time a while back that what looked like the sort of night that tall tales are made of almost turned into Tony Plush getting his neck stretched! It all started at this tavern when a group of young ladies came in. Two sisters and their cousin came in to the tavern that night to let loose and little, and Avandra knows that Tony Plush is always willing to oblige. The sisters were in Tony Plush's company for most of the evening listening to Tony's tales of adventures had both near and far. Eventually it started to get late and the young ladies decided to return to their home. Being the gentleman Tony Plush is an offer was made and ace/?pted to escort them home. With each sister on an arm and the cousin in tow we set out for their home. Once we were about half way back to their home the sisters cousin lost her mind and she grabbed my dagger and attempted to rob Tony Plush with his own dagger! So their Tony Plush is, standing in the middle of the street with a girl on each arm and another holding Tony Plush's own dagger on him threatening him! Tony Plush attempted to talk to her and convince her to back down as Tony Plush could not hurt a woman. Not in a situation like that but she refused to back down. After several tense moments the local constabulary were able to come and defuse the situation and ultimately the cousin was found guilty of attempted robbery, but talk about an embarrassing situation. Tony Plush, a professional scout and adventurer being held up with his own dagger?! All of that because of a pretty face... Well, 2 pretty faces really but who's counting?"

Tony will pause to see how his story is received...if people are listening Tony will continue telling stories...

@Tony

The table you sit at has four men playing a dice game more commonly known as Filthy Beggar Bluff. In your travels you are familiar with it and have a general grasp of the mechanics. (Roll some die in a cup, look, place a cover over and bet's are made as to the value etc etc). At the table to your right is a bearded man who seems slightly annoyed at the story. To his right is a goateed man with a grin, to your left is a bald man that is older generally amused, and to his left is a young man with a patchy beard who is very enthralled with the story of the women.

"My name is Ayron" the young one says "All the wya from Waterdeep? That is a helluva a journey. How'd ye manage to get into the Citadel? Picked up by the patrols maybe? Any women with ya?" He says a bit hopeful.

"Calm down Ayron. I doubt, Tony Plush was it?, has a cavaran of young friendly lasses that would give you a second look. My name is Grindle, beardy over there is Chorts, and the goatee guy is Ralk. We don't get news from out very often, and word from the war out west?"

"Your roll." Chorts says curtly setting the dice dup down kind of hard in front of you.

Tony will make his roll

Insight roll on Chorts, what's his problem?
Insight: [dice]0[/dice]

"Tony Plush it is Grindle. And yes, the Phoenix Guard did in fact come all the way from Waterdeep, by way of Brackton and Silverdeep. Not the most direct route no, but we had some business to do along the way. We had to pick up some valuable items to aid in the construction of some magical gate contraption that will allow the southern alliance to move items and people directly between here and Waterdeep via teleportation. Oh, and while we were in Brackton we also stopped the coronation of a new noble by the Army of Blood by rescuing the priest of Avandra they were going to use as a human sacrifice as part of the ceremony. Which then led us to Silverdeep where we met a handful of dwarves, fought off an incursion by the Army of Blood there and then Phoenix Guard swore to assist them in time with reclaiming their home under the mountain. The dwarves, paladins of Pelor all, and also a former member of the Brackton city guard came with us on our journey.

As for how we got into the citadel, we entered through one of the secret passages. One of the members of our group, Victae, served here years ago and she aided us in locating the entrance and verifying our identities with the guards to allow us in without bloodshed.

The war itself, Tony Plush would not say it's at a stalemate, but to a degree it seems that way. With the way the three powers are arranged currently there is little advancement or retreat by any force. The Phoenix Guard is trying to find ways to tip that balance and creating this gate is the first step toward that. If we can get you folks the aid you need to break the siege outside and knock the Chu'lassa on their heels we can open a brand new front to this war and start to turn the tide in our favor."

Chorts is the kind of guy who sees clouds on a sunny day. The grass is always greener and he has a bit of envy on it. But more specific his pile of coin is smaller than the rest of the table.

"Death to the Chulassa! Death to the Army of Blood!" Grible says and the table and the bar all shout before taking a sip. "Seems you have done quite a lot along the way. I'd love to see something other than these dreary walls. Waterdeep is near the ocean if the maps are right, and I'd love to smell the ocean.Bards talk of the ocean sometimes, though we haven't seen one in quite a while. The last one that was in here died of appendicitis. Shame. Sange himself to as he died. Beautiful and haunting at the same time."

Bets go on your roll into the high pot and low pot and play continues.

"Tony Plush and the Phoenix Guard are just trying to do what needs doing. The advantage of not being actually part of an army itself is we have the freedom to go when and where needed. The Southern Alliance couldn't send a formation up here through enemy territory to bring you the gate supplies, but we could. So here we are. In the end will be bards tell tales about what the Phoenix Guard has done...maybe...after all we do travel with one and who knows maybe he'll write epic tales of our adventures. But in the end it's not about tavern tales and women, which are and should be enjoyed along the way" Tony says that last part with a look right at Ayron and gives him a wink "but it's about winning a war and ensuring that we all stand free to pursue our lives as we want. Not under the slavery or oppression of the Chu'lassa or Army of Blood and their supposed deities."

When drinks at this table get low Tony will buy the next round for everyone at the table

@Trinal

The work construction continues. Labor has arrived and started chiseling the platform for the runes. It is a rather loud affair and to concentrate you have taken to stuffing your ears with small bits of cloth.

@ Stavis

The day carries on and you hear the faintest whisper "bsswoowosprelpoasejkjpmeooow" Looking aorund you are convinced you heard it but see no source for it. You investigate the fountain again, nothing odd.

@Tony

The rounds you buy lighten up the mood a little for the table loser Chorts. "You ain't bad Tony." To your keen eye you notice an odd knick mark on the bar post. It seems somehow familiar, but you can't quite place it. You figure to investigate a bit later and resume gaming.

@Syric

You bid thepriest farewell and make your way through the street and run into Victae walking with a group. "Halt." She barks at them. She steps aside and says to you "Getting along okay? Looking for something in particular?"

Stavis will also look towards the guards to see if they noticed anything as well. Assuming they don't, can't help but remember the slaves that had gone stir-crazy after having been left in solitary confinement as a part of some disciplinary action. Though convinces himself that it had taken far far longer then an afternoon, after eyeing the wine again decides he should up-stain for now in case something in it is its having an effect on him.

Going forward Stavis will try to be more aware of his surroundings so that should he hear it again will have a better understanding of where it is coming from at the expense of slowing down his copying so as to not make a mistake. Contemplates meditating to give himself the best chance but quickly dismisses based off of his bad reaction to his last meditation.

@Stavis You look around and close your eyes to focus on the whisper. It is gone and nothing is making noise that you cannot account for. You search the room intently looking for something you may have missed. This causes one of the guards to peek a view before shrugging his shoulders and getting back to guard duty.

The symbol carved into the bar is worn, probably fifteen years if you had to make a rough guess. It is from a rival secret organization you think, but aren't sure, and if so which one.

The bathroom is surprisingly clean for a bar. These citadel types take rules super seriously.

Stavis will let the guards know why he is looking around in the noise he heard when he is close to finished will dawn on him. "Is the tunnels that the water source is using capable of accommodating the enemy force to try and use that as a means to attack?"

If he is asked why he cares will respond in matter of fact "Looking out for myself as well as the fortress as I know should an attack occur, your first job will be to dispose of me so that your man power can be put to better use and ensure I can't pose a risk to the Citadel."

@Stavis

The guards seem cagey about answering questions about the design of the citadel.

"Stay calm dark elf. I'll send for a commander to discuss this with you. How about you have a seat and drink some wine or water or whatever."

The second guard does a quick blast of four notes on a whistle around his neck.

A few moments later an older soldier with a accompaniment of four more soldiers appear.

"Guards, what is going on?"

"Sir the dark elf is making inquiries, and not sure if this is a trick felt it best to have a commander present to answer his questions, sir!"

The older soldier looks at stavis and waves his four soldiers into the room who take up corners hands on the weapons, but not drawn.

"Okay drow, what is it? And speak plainly, no fancy word play." the commanding soldier says.

Stavis will nod to the commander but will otherwise stay seated at the table "Of course sir. I heard a noise, and after investigating the room was unable to determine the cause. The one thing I thought of was the possibility that the tunnels designed for transporting the water to the fountains being large enough for the enemy to try and use them to initiated an attack of some kind."

"I would be more than happy to be in the wrong sir and merrily a symptom of a lack of busyness on my part but I do realize that my continued safety is dependent on safety of the Citadel as I would be surprised if the men set to guard me here weren't ordered to ensure I don't pose a threat should an attack occur."

After that will explain in detail exactly what he heard and where indicating from his seat unless requested by the commander to show by getting up.
