"No. He's our friend and companion, and has saved all of our lives more than once. He is not your enemy, and has been cast out by his people. He has put up with more than most, sharing our dangers and the fears of many we meet without complaint. This is Staris, I'm Trinal, that's Tony Plush, Syric and the imposing lady is Victae. A pleasure to meet friends in this hostile land."

Tony will keep his hands away from his weapons and will purposely finger the symbol of Avandra on his cloak clip.

"Huh." Zelvo doesn't seem sure what to make of that. "Well if you vouch for him, you're responsible in the eyes of Pelor if he stabs us in the back. Anyhow go sit by the fire and I'll grab more more meats."

Atrios (silver hair) stands and bows "Are you here to aid us in defending?"

"In a manner of speaking. We actually thought Silver Deep abandoned or overrun by the enemy. We're here seeking thorium and some gems to build an artifact that we hope will help us all in the war. Sadly we didn't come to defend directly, as we honestly did not know there was anything to defend. We're very glad to see friends here."

"Ah then that's going to be a problem." Atrios says. "When the damned and dishonorable Moltke buried the city, it became a hotspot for looters across the mountains and lands. Many adventuring types set forth hoping to get into the ruins and loot the buried treasures of the dwarven peoples. Well after a few years my lads here and I swore an oath to Pelor at the Cathedral of Shinning Light to reclaim the city and one day, when the dwarven diaspora ends, lead our people into their home to reclaim their wealth and city."

Victae asks "So why the defenses against the gate?" pointing to the spikes that would greet someone leaving the buried city.

"Ah that is because of the death and foulness that is down there lass." Zelvo says "When a tragedy of this magnitude happens, foul creatures are attracted like a moth to flame. So we prevent anyone from goin in, or coming out, until an army of appropriate size can help us clear it out and retake and rebuild the city."

Looking at the rest of the group, Trinal says "Why is it that it's ALWAYS the people who are supposedly on our side that pose the most problems and cause the most delays?"

To the others, he says "We're not looters, and came prepared to purchase what we needed, if there was someone to purchase it from. We need the thorium and a few gems- and I do mean only a few; not enough to fill even a small pouch- to help liberate Aern Bruth. If you truly want to see Silver Deep reclaimed and the diaspora ended, you would do well to help us- or at the least, not hinder our mission. We will treat the city with respect and only take what we need. If you wish, we'll leave fair payment for it with you, but we must have it or Aern Bruth will fall... and in the end, everything else, most likely."

"Now I don't doubt your cause, or even that you'd take the barest of items to achieve it, or even that you'd be willing to pay for it. You strike me as good folk. Not sure about the bard, but that is mostly because one wooed a woman from me 20 years ago. Anyway, what kind of paladin would I be if I broke an oath I swore to Pelor?" Torvo says with a friendly smile as he hands over a plate with sizzling sausage on it.

Stavis will whisper to Trinal "How difficult would it be to setup a gate here as well?"

"I had assumed we would have to clear the city from the creatures that would have been attracted, so helping to retake shouldn't be that much more of a stretch. Though helping to rebuild wouldn't be as available to build the artifact we are commissioned with but would help spread word of Silverdeep being rebuilt would be a major blow to our common enemy. With the added hope of attracting additional people to help rebuild."

Quietly but not whispering Trinal replies "I'm not sure... Not too difficult, if i understand the theory right. I don't think the Professor has to actually do anything for us to link to his gate. Are you suggesting we create a gate here to liberate Silver Deep?"

"Understandable sir," Stavis will chuckle a bit "though I doubt it will be much consolation I can assure you any attempts I have made to woo the ladies failed misserably."

Stavis will then indicate towards Tony "Him on the other hand would be one to watch for."

Whispering back "If we build one here would go along way to helping Silver Deep rebuild which would give more leverage in this area as well as be a boon to the dwarfs and potentially help create alliances for the armies."

Smiling, Trinal will take a sausage and pass the plate along. "It's been too long since I've had good hot food. Thank you."

Munching, Trinal says "Well, it seems that our goals may align, at least in some way. Let me ask you a couple of questions. First, how much thorium is there in Silver Deep? Would (OOC: Joun, insert the amount we'd need for a gate x2 here) be relatively easy to get? And second, would there be a good selection of decent quality gems? And thirdly, how much of a force do you think would be necessary to liberate the city?"

To Stavis, again quietly but not whispering, Trinal replies "Agreed, but I worry about the amount of force that would be required. I'm beginning to wonder if possibly Silver Deep as a source of thorium for additional gates might be a strategic asset worth securing first. Tony, what do you think?"

"Stavis, you wound me!"
Tony will mime taking an arrow to the chest
"You all know that Tony Plush would never attempt to attract the affections of a female that was in the company of another male! Now if he is not there when we meet though, if she doesn't tell me she is with someone then it's a different story.

Now though to the business at hand. We understand that you swore an oath and that you will not break it, nor would we ask you to. However there is always room to negotiate as well. What if we agreed to just borrow the materials we need from you? You could accompany us into Silverdeep and take an accounting of the amount of Thorium and gems we obtain. We swear to you that we will return a like amount of Thorium and gems to you by a specified time in the future. Additionally in exchange for the loan we shall pay interest in the form of providing manpower and potentially even a gate between Silverdeep and Waterdeep and or Aern Bruth to assist with recapturing the city and with trade once the war is over."

"Another thought, I understand you want the dwarves to reclaim their city and wealth, but why don't you enlist us to assist? If you allow us to retrieve the few things we need, we would surely come across other items of wealth that we could bring back to you to fund your plans to reunite your brethren and reclaim the city. That would be a real benefit to you beyond assisting us with our tasks."

Syric touches the amulet as he continues, "We no longer have with us one who follows Pelor as you do, but we all have oaths to our deities that we are trying to uphold".

Zelvo looks intrigued. Torvo looks skeptical. Atrios speaks "What are these gates you guys are going on about? How do they work exactly?"

Trinal looks at these guys carefully, wondering how much he can trust them. We just met them and anyone could pretend to be a paladin, although he will admit to himself that he has no idea why anyone would do that here or for us specifically.

Seeing as insight seems more appropriate for what you are doing (and Trinal is trained in insight) I'm taking your roll (6) and using that modifier instead +11=17

Looking over the Trio of dwarves you see that they all carry signs of Pelor (though stylized) you'd expect from a devout follower of Pelor. Zelvo seems most interested in your party and their ability to help the dwarves. This is probably since he is the youngest. Torvo seems most skeptical of your group, but not hostile. Atrios seems mostly to be pondering your offers and evaluating it against his own moral considerations and beliefs.

Victae taps Trinal on the shoulder and asks for an aside.

"Strategically I want to offer a notable concern on building a gate here specifically. This place has meager defenses and is not that far away from Brackton. If word gets back to the Baroness or Razvan that the dwarves, who have been mourning the dead and guarding trinkets of a fallen city, now have allies and some influx of support, they might come and investigate. If they do and capture the gate, we will have opened a back line route to the heart of the Mortal Alliance's defense. While the Citadel is not much better in regards to proximity to the enemy, they at least have an army which can and has held off a siege for a very long time. I'll go with the group's decision, but we need to be careful."

OOC: Very kind of you, and good point about perc vs insight.

Trinal looks at them and says "I'm taking a bit of a risk here, but I think we can trust you. We're on a mission to help defeat the Army of Blood and their allies. One of the keys to winning this war- or at least turning the tide- is the Citadel of Aern Bruth." Trinal glances at Victae before continuing. "Liberating it is our mission. The gates we describe are arcane in nature, and allow people and goods to move from place to place without traveling the distance between. They work in a sort of net, where you can choose your destination by aligning them properly. The theory behind them and the magic to drive them is... well, it's quite old." He smiles wryly. "I hate the word 'ancient', it just makes whatever you're saying sound so ostentatious, you know?"

Smiling, he goes on. "Our mission is to build a gate at Aern Bruth, allowing for its liberation from the siege that holds it. To build it we need certain gems..." he pulls out the parchment with their 'shopping list' on it and holds it up to them, "which we reduce to 'essences'... oh, never mind that part. The most important thing we need is thorium. It's a critical component of the gate. Once we have it we'll be able to travel to Aern Bruth and hopefully create a link to Waterdeep and liberate the Citadel."

He looks serious and pauses momentarily. "There are a couple of possibilities we can move forward with. One, we could arrange to take the materials we need and move on to Aern Bruth, then come back here to build another gate. Second, we could build a gate here, then move on to Aern Bruth and build one there, but that's contingent on the materials for two gates being available- which they may not be."

Continuing to look at the paladins with a serious demeanor, Trinal says "I know that you would like to see Silver Deep liberated. But Aern Bruth is besieged and every day that goes by is another day we may lose it. Silver Deep is important but is also in ruins. Without diminishing the importance of or the connection you have to Silver Deep, I think our goal should be to liberate Aern Bruth and then return to build a gate here, where there isn't an active army at the gates. I believe you can hold the entrance against the foulness that has taken up residence until that time. However, if you deem it necessary, we can attempt to build a gate here first."

He sighs and smiles sadly. "No choices in this war have been easy ones. Without your cooperation one way or the other, we will have little luck in our mission, so the choice is yours."

Retconning this to Victae before my previous speech: "I agree. I think we can convince them to make the right choice without making it so stark, and maybe appeal to their sense of honor as paladins. Wish me luck." He smiles and chucks her on the shoulder, then ducks the inevitable swipe while laughing.

Atrios with his lips tight and stroking his beard absent mindedly says, "You are welcome to stay with us, but I need to pray on this and divine Pelor's will on this matter. I hope you understand that this will take some time."
