Dood showed me this:
http://dungeonsmaster.com/2011/01/action-points/
Which I think makes a compelling case that action points in general need to be reworked as a game mechanic. Often times it is used as the "Let me take a second crack at that" instead of something truly heroic.
What I'm curious about is how you guys would feel about changing action points to more of a "cheat card"
Basically you still get action points at the same rate, but when you spend them you'd basically outline how you will be awesome and what rule mods you are making to do so.
Example:
Victae decides to throw her polearm to pin a pirate to the deck who is threatening Ham'mon. Her action point would allow her to use the rolling format for "sweeping blow" (enc power) as a ranged attack instead of melee. (allowed)
Example 2:
Tony is surrounded by baddies and Trinal wants to use an AoE 3x3 burning spray on them. The problem is that Tony would normally get hit with friendly fire. Trinal wants to use his action point to "blow a ring attack" with the center square continuing to be safe. (allowed)
Example 3:
Syric wants to travel to the top of the tower in one jump. He wishes he could fly for one round. He uses an action point to do so. (probably not going to happen)
Example 4: Tony wants to go all Inigo Montoya at the end of Princess Bride and use one of his attacks to specifically disarm an opponent in addition to making a slash scarring his face. (due to dramatic flare allowed)
I hope that kind of illustrates how I think things could be made better with it.
This would be after the mumford episode is complete and not affect current fights.

Sounds like turning action points into a way to do something dramatic and stupid.
I like it.

I'll approve of this only if Reese comes back so that he can try to do stupid dramatic things and then fail dramatically.

Re: LPDnD: Rules revision discussion
So I bought the 5e rulebook. One of the core mechanics is advantage/disadvantage. Currently if you have an advantage it usually means +2 to the roll. In 5e you just roll 2 die and take the higher die. I'm gonna keep this in mind as a possible rule tweak.

Re: LPDnD: Rules revision discussion
Interesting. WotC has put up basic rules for 5e online
http://media.wizards.com/2014/downloads ... s_v0.2.pdf
http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/feature ... basicrules
In case anyone is curious. I'm not opposed to having a rework of the campaign into 5e rules which from what I've seen tries to make the game more like traditional DnD and less "video gamey"
Interesting article:

Re: LPDnD: Rules revision discussion
I'm not sure I'm ready to make a change just now; my 4e books still smell new. And this is kind of fun the way we're rolling. Maybe once we get to a plateau with this campaign or feel like a reboot?

I'm fine staying with 4e. And if you've bought books we ought to stick with it. I was just throwing out some of the information I found as interesting stuff since it has some novel mechanics.

The advantage/disadvantage mechanic seems very intriguing, I'll admit.
