Let's Play Dungeons and Dragons: Alvis edition! (Game thread

Post by Blackferne » Sat Feb 01, 2014 3:08 am

The year is 1241 of the age. The great and powerful Empire of Antika Sinnum crumbled at the start of the age and in the millenia since the crumbling of the old order the age of Kings has come to the realm. Kings look over their kingdoms with Dukes loyal to them. Dukes have vassal Earls who will support their banner in times of war and in matters of taxation. Earls rely on the support of Barons, and Barons call upon knights and sheriffs to keep the law of the land.

The realm you find yourself in is the Kingdom of Val Rikur. It has humans, elves, half-elves, dwarfs, and assorted others from other kingdoms who have immigrated to this land as subjects. The stage starts in the small farmer's market town of Belholt. The town itself is the home of Baron Turston Howell the First. On weekends farmers and merchants come from miles around to occupy the fairground, set up tents and trade. The only tavern in town is the Mighty Elk Tavern and Inn.

The tavern is a two story building that is L shaped. the entire upstairs is lodging rooms for rent. The long part of of the down stairs is lined with long tables for serving food and drink. The short part of the L as best you can guess is the kitchen and residence for the innkeep Bran and his wife Bambi.

The time is mid morning. The place is already clear of most locals. Near the fire is a hooded figure plucking away at an instrument. It is a well known song about a Bear and a Maiden, but the musician is only playing the tune and not singing the words. Two humans are seated on different tables having walked in a few minutes ago and are waiting to be served. A young looking half elf is leaning on the bar taking a survey of the scene. Another half elf in hide armor with a great sword strapped to his back is looking out the front window. A dragonborn in scale armor has walked through the front door followed moments later by a human child of maybe 10 years of age who takes a peice of parchment out of his sack with a hammer and a nail and proceeds to hammer the paper to a center post that has other fliers hanging from it.

The boy speaks "Hear ye, hear ye. My master is looking for brave and strong professionals to complete a task. Pay is good." He awkwardly points to the flier as if he had rehearsed the presentation of the flier earlier and not very well, then he leaves.

Bran is cleaning plates in a bucket behind the bar. A woman roughly middle age, but attractive says "Latecomers eh? Who's hungry for some grub?"

And go.

Rules of posting:
Dialog should be bolded.
Out of combat, just do actions in a narrative form as you see in this post with the boy, bran, the barmaid.
If a roll is needed but aren't sure feel free to ask. You can mark out of character comments in brackets like this [OOC: Did Joun just make a GOT reference with that bardthing?]
When we get to combat I'll explain that in greater detail. If we need an OOC thread we can make one, but don't have to do so I think if people use the OOC brackets.

Trinal puts his ale on the bar, leans his staff against the stool and wanders- nay, saunters over to the paper on the wall. He has a somewhat goofy smile on his face as he reads the notice. He nods once, firmly, and looks around the room, the smile still on his face.

He wanders back to the bar, picks up his ale mug and says "I could stand to eat. I could also stand to have another ale."

The offer of adventure brought Syric out of his reverie. His most recent employment involving the disposal of a seemingly never-ending stream of various large rodents for a pittance had left him with an itch to scratch. He knew risk often provides a greater reward and his caution often gave way to his curiosity.

After he saw the younger half-human return to the bar, he took his turn in front of the notice. Returning to his seat he instead continues back to the bar. He looks to the woman"I'll take your darkest ale. What 'grub' do you serve here?"

Tbe notie reads:
Tough and brave men and women wanted for a dangerous job. Come to Truque manor tomorrow at sunset for job details. Payday is good.
The woman says "We are making lamb stew for lunch for a silver. Bran will get your ales for a silver a piece."

"Tony Plush could certainly use a bite or two this morning beautiful! So what meal are you serving now, is it still second breakfast or are we on to elevensies already? I can never remember how those halflings down south do it! You know what, how about a nice MLT? Mutton, lettuce and tomato, is that an option because that sounds delicious. With some wine to wash it down please!"

Speaking is a human who is clearly out of adolescence but is not approaching middle aged either, it's hard to put a height on him sitting down but he has a lanky build with short brown hair and a short, well trimmed beard that comes to a small point at his chin. He has pale blue eyes and is dressed in leather armor with a dark forest green hooded cload around his shoulders. Affixed to his waist is a scabbard with a long, thin blade in it. Both the hilt of the sword and the sheath look worn and used. Tony also has a dagger affixed to his belt opposite his sword and a couple other weapons affixed to his pack sitting at his feet on the floor.

Tony will make no move to leave his table any time soon, and he will discreetly study anyone who shows interest in that posting.

When his meal is delivered Tony will attempt to engage the barmaid or whoever delivers the food in conversation trying to learn the news of the area, who the master is that the boy mentioned when placing the flier and what the job could possible be.

Syric nods in acceptance "That is fine." after a pause, "Would you happen to know where I can find Truque manor? he says with his natural elven charm wrapped in bearded sex appeal, his father's other gift.

Trinal nods and says "I'll have at a bowl of the stew and at least one ale." Dressed in plain clothes with no decoration, he carries a wooden staff and there is a pack near his feet. The dust of the road is apparent in his brown shoulder-length hair. The smile seems to never leave his face or his brown eyes. Looking at the other who was perusing the paper he says "Sounds interesting, if a bit cryptic! You going to see what's what this evening, I take it?"

The woman turning to Tony says "Lunch is stew today. I'm afraid no sandwiches. We got a mulled wine. So should I put you down for a bowl and a cup of wine? 2 silver, good deal."

Turning to Bran shouts " Stew and ale for that one!" pointing to Syric. She turns to Syric and says "Master Brago Truque lives cross the street in the green house. Calling it a manor is his little joke."

A grizzled man in a wide brimmed hat walks in. He nods to Bran who stops ladling stew and grabs a bottle from the shelf and puts o the bar. "Late night again?"

The man sits down at the stool and starts taking several long swigs. "Aye. I saw that crazy man strung up another bandit out by Koenig as a warning again. Don't be surprised if sheriff's in a tizzy this afternoon. Anyway I'm beat." He stands, tips his hat to Bran and the woman and walks upstairs.

Trinal looks up and eyes Bran quizzically. "Crazy man? Who's doing what with the stringing up of bandits, now?"

"As long as you are the one serving it count me intrigued m'lady."

Tony leans back to wait for his food and drink and half closes his eyes projecting an air of relaxation and casual indifference.

The indifference is actually feigned as I'll be listening intently to the conversation between the Bran ad Trinal and still monitoring and assessing anyone else who shows interest in the flier. My assessments are going to be geared toward their likely combat abilities, powers and armament.

Having arrived yesterday evening, playing through most of the night looks down to see that he has collected just enough tips to pay Bran his share that had been agreed apone his arrival and offer of services. Decides that he should throw in his lot having seen no other means of earning pay through the night and can tell that the group present is also interested and can hold off sleep only so much longer. Puts down his lyre with his pack, scrounges the coins and his cup, and heads to the bar. As he passes in front of Plush makes no effort to conceal his leather gear and a number of shuriken lining his belt under his simple travelling cloak. After finding an open spot as close to Bran as possible reaches over the bar and places the coins as close to Bran as he can, places the cup down in front of him self, pulls back his hood and says to the bar maid "I'll take a cup of soup, a refill of the wine, and a room to rest." Places 7 silver next to the cup walks over and reads the notice on the board before walking back to his place at the bar.

@Trinal: Bran looks at you and with a bit of that Old Man (let me tell you how it is young whippersnapper) condescending tone he says as he hands over a bowl of stew "Out a ways is a paranoid kook. Always thinks people are out to steal from him, and I guess he caught someone and killed him by rights. Well by rights if the sheriff says so."

@Tony Plush: To appraise the combat worthyness of other people in the tavern you need to do a perception check. DC 10. To do so while appearing not to be doing so will require either a bluff or stealth skill check DC 8.

TEACHING MOMENT which Furiel already knows how to but for everyone's benefit. To do a skill check I will ask for the skill and sometimes I will give you a target(DC) number to equal or beat. To do so you roll 1 20 sided die (or 1d20) and add the appropriate modifier from your skills area on your character sheet. It should be notated like so [Syric rolls a a bluff check 1d20+9 (he has 4 ability mod and 5 because he trained it) so Syric would roll the die, let's say he rolls a 6. he would notate it as 1d20+9= 6+9= 15. And if that was high enough his bluff would be successful]

@Stavis: Bran has been watching you all night and refills your wine, tells you which room is yours and gives you a cup of soup with a side of bread. "Good playing with the bear and maiden fair song."

A hard look forms in Syric's eyes as he notices the drow cross to the bar. His gaze remains upon the bard until he sits, at which point he looks back to the other half-human who had spoken to him prior to that rough looking regular disturbing the atmosphere with his news.

"Aye, I'm interested in the job as well, as long as it has nothing to do with an old kook leaving bodies as warnings" he says as he offers his hand "the name's Syric"

Trinal looks at Bran and his smile widens, then he laughs good-naturedly. Turning to Syric, he holds out his hand and shakes Syric's hand. "I'm Trinal. Nice meeting you too. I hope it's something more interesting than some old man who kills bandits! I expect it's sage advice to stay away from his place."

He looks over at the dragonborn near the door and says in Draconic, "Hello, friend! Are you interested in the job the lad mentioned also?" He smiles and quaffs a bit more ale.

Stavis after finishing his meal stands up from the bar, looks over Syric and can't help buy says to the pair at the bar "Oh I don't know Syric you look capable enough of handling an old kook to me." Heads to and retrieves his pack and lyre commenting with a slight smirk on his face as he heads to his room "Though should you truly be concerned might I suggest bringing a Drow as a potential scapegoat, should you or anyone else be willing to take me up on my offer," Holds up three fingers "need only knock thrice at my door, or can catch me before I set up for playing tonight."

When he gets to his door or before he turns the corner which ever first, turns to sees if there is any response from anyone in the room.

[Not sure if I should stop here waiting for the response or go ahead and continue with the understanding that should there be a response to ignore from this point forward.]

Should he have gotten no response enters his room leaving the door slightly ajar to try and better hear the goings on in the hall and slightly more importantly any comings and goings that passes his door, while he meditates/enters a trance in front of his bed on bended knee with his hands resting on his legs.

Unless otherwise interrupted meditates for 4 hours.

[should it get that far will wait for GM response to state when said time has arrived.]

In the tavern walks two locals.

"Did you see that ludicrous display last night?" a bearded gentleman says to his companion.

"What was Callier thinking putting Wentle in so early?" the companion replies.

"The thing about the Stallions is they always try to walk it in." He sighs "Bran two lunches and two ales." The beared gentleman says.

Gobo Fraggle is a tall Dragonborn, but not overly impressive. Meekly dressed in scale armor, cheap but effective. He grumbles in draconic roughly translated to "Adventure, more like penance" and takes a seat loudly at a table in the middle of the room.

He eyes the shrieking child "Any job to pay the bills I suppose." and looks to Bran "Good sir, a pint when you are able."

Gobo fidgets with his gloves and armor, a bit uncomfortable in his "scales" and settles in to finish his glass. Adventure and a job are nice, but not as nice as a drink in the warmth of the Inn.

"My good man, what do you have on the menu that a humble servant such as I could afford? My belly is empty but ale is often the better of the two meals"

Gobo give a small nod in the way a humble soldier might to a commander when speaking with Bran. His voice, gestures, and manners point to an honorable Dragonborn fighter used to serving, but his uncomfort seems to imply he is uneasy with himself.
