Pretty soon Ham is just going to mix the gunpowder and the ale and start drinking that.

Since there was a mass level up I'd like to take a sec to explain how I'm doing XP.

Quests grant chunks of XP larger than you'd typically get otherwise. So when you finish a quest at low level it is pretty much expected that everyone has a shot to go up. Participation is a small steady amount, RP is a bonus to participation. I do this because RP enhances the overall narrative. It gives me things to hook into, and flushes our your campaign world and makes it more engaging. Combat is strictly by the book. Every monster in the MM has an XP value. The sum of monsters in the encounter/people in that fight. So if for example you guys went down the mine further alone and happened to find a monster worth 400xp and you solo'd it you'd get that all to yourself. Though a monster worth 400XP at your level would probably kill you solo.

As you guys go up there might be points where Person A gets to level 7 a few days or maybe a week before Person B. That is to be expected, but I don't want people sharing their XP parcel amounts simply because I don't want people to feel like they need to do exactly what this other guy is doing just to get a nominal bit more XP. IE I don't want 7 Tony Plushes or Syrics or Ham'mons. We need variety, play your niche well and actively and you'll be fine.

I'm taking ritual magic as part of my second level. I always liked that aspect of old-school D&D. :)

Syric's failure to control the situation which lead to him almost killing a teammate has left him more introspective, Syric is turning his eye inward to take a better look at him self, resulting in the Monk Multiclass feat. He will try to better harness his psionic magic and meditate with thoughts to his relationship/rift with Melora and his place in the elf world.

If you guys want to metagame a sec here. Having a large pool of interchangeable players isn't necessarily a bad idea.

List of PC with roles:
Gobo- Tank
Tony- striker/Tank blend
Ham'mon- Striker
Spintik (maizan)- Striker
Trinal- Striker
Syric- Healer
Stavos-Healer

List of Company member NPCs
Victae- Tank
Professor-Healer

That makes several different viable combinations to party with. It also opens it up for people to take a break and come back in later. Allows for there to be bigger battles than you typically see in a DnD campaign because you have so many heroes. (100 minion battle for instance).

Just throwing that out there.

So Jimer isn't playing anymore? Cuz he's kinda not listed...

I think clearly though we should divide it such that Gobo, Tony, Spitnik, Victae and Trinal are in 1 group and the professor, Mary Ann (Stavos) Ginger (the professor) mrs Howell (Syric) and Ham go in the other. :shifty:

Not that I'm completely against the grouping but you do realize you put both healers in one group

Actually I put all 3 in 1 group.
Just as I put all 3 tankish chars in 1 group as well.

It was ironic because it was specifically designed to be the LEAST optimal grouping I could come up with. And one I'm not sure Joun would be ok with as well since it broke up his NPCs as well and I suspect they are a matched set. Just as I'm pretty confident that Gobo and Ham'mon are a matched set as well.

With 9 people, including the 2 NPCs splitting 5/4 would be the best option IMO.

Group 1 - Gobo, Ham'n'eggs, ????
Group 2 - Victae, Professor, ????

Personally Tony would lean toward the Gobo, Ham group because he's worked with them already and he feels that he and Gobo make an effective team on the front lines. That and Ham'mon's reaction to the evil cult angle makes him suspect that the two of them have some similarities of purpose as well. So if you put Tony Plush in G1 then that group needs at a minimum of Syric or Stavis to join it so it has a healer.

Discuss...

It could be Victae, Professor, Trinal and Syric.

To balance i was thinking of introducing an invoker striker who's a religious zealot with smiting and smoting. Or a control wizard. Professor and victae aren't a matched set, and if needed i can rework the professor to be less healy.

So Joun, how much mix and match is there going to be do you think between groups or when we do the split now is this going to be kinda semi-permanent?

I'm just asking because I want to know the full repercussions meta-game wise deciding how the split goes. Because as of now I can easily see the break going like this...

Drayson mission: Gobo, Ham, Syric and Tony

Sheriff mission: Trinal, Stavis, Spitnik, NPC1 and NPC2

[Metagame moment]

This round of adventures is basically a 4 room mini dungeons I've made. The first fight we did (Heppil) was to get you guys used to your abilities and how to work in combat together. This is the next logical step. Tracking healing surges, choosing when to use your daily will be important, managing action points etc.

A note about action points: You get your action point back after either 1) A full night's sleep or 2) after two successful encounters.

The 4 man is Drayson's crypt
The 5 man is the Sheriff's deal (which has a 4 room series of fights)

Neither is going to be a slippery slope of story that prevents you from mixing and matching in a few days. Basically go out, do the dance with death, kill your team mates, apologize that they were in your blast radius, ragequit, come back boom next round of story.

Note though: These dungeons will be tough, so be prepared.

Also quick note. These are the first sets of fights you'll see minions. A quick note about minions. They have 1 HP, but they hit and have the defenses of mobs of the same level.

Example a Level 2 soldier would have an AC of around 16, and HP in the 30s or 40s, and have an attack bonus of like 5-7 depending on various factors. A minion is the same except the HP.

Because of this powers that are "miss: deals half damage" etc do not work on them. You have to land a hit.

Also in regards to AoE.

If you are doing an AoE attack the way we do it, is Roll damage first, then roll an attack on each particular mob.

Example:
Casting bad breath!
dmg [dice]0[/dice]
Against A [dice]1[/dice]

Against B [dice]2[/dice]

Against C [dice]3[/dice]

Now if any of the attacks are crit we automatically go to max damage, (and I'll roll percentile) to see if it is double max damage.

Incidentally in case anyone is wondering Victae's fighting style, at her best (perhaps at higher levels) I think she'd be like the polearm guy in this scene:

Sweet moves. :) I like the first break where the guys sword does not stop vibrating. :)

Game question: Is there anything in DnD4e that deals with Professions? And can and how would my character acquire one?

I was wondering if Spintik could be a Bower/Fletcher?

I have seen that, and I've used it for live sessions before. Not sure how it would do for our setup since it is in essence a "play by post" game.
