The quest for transportation... tall man's trouble

Post by Sir Psyko » Wed Jul 07, 2010 8:11 pm

I've been looking for a means of transportation now that I have employment again. I have a ride temporarily (for the 6 weeks of training), but will need to get something of my own sometime mid-late August when my schedule goes to it's regular hours. Walking is still an option, though it's a 45min walk for me (about an hour for the rest of you short-legged folk) and I'd rather not get to work sweating like... well, there's too many options for this one :shifty:

So...

I've looked at cars... not really much I can get but buy-here pay-here $300/month stuff and I'd rather just buy something cheap for a grand or so, drive it for a month or three and resell it/trade it on something nicer later than have to have full coverage insurance on a $5000 vehicle and pay twice what the thing is worth. Add to that that I don't fit in much and it's even harder to find something. I'm still scouring the listings for potentials, but right now, there is no One.

Bicycles are not designed for people my height, or apparently my weight (most bikes have a limit of 200lbs, which I didn't realize until I started looking for "tall bikes" ). Those that are "tall" enough cost $2000+ (essentially custom built) and I can't justify spending as much on a bike since I could buy a car for that much. I'm watching for sales on a couple bikes that have the 61cm frame I need, but even the "cheap" one is $900 MSRP (Specialized Tricross Single).

So I'm seriously considering Scooters... yeah, really. I don't have my motorcycle endorsement yet, but it's $20 and a written test to get a year learner permit, and then there's classes for $25 that will get you your license if you pass without any other tests. I can get a used 150cc Scooter for under a grand and a brand new 49cc version as low as $600 (with tags and title for about $25 annually). About 90MPG and 50+ MPH. Sure, they're not that stylish but I'm really only looking to get to and from work and the occasional trip to the store. Maybe I'm a European at heart? Or should I just get a "No fat chicks" shirt to make the image complete? I do want a real motorcycle, but cost and size again become issues.

I wish I could just buy a Huffy bike at Walmart for $150 like the rest of you short bastards.

How tall are you again? Like 10 feet?

Really...this is what you are going to go with? Nearly limitless options and you leave us this steaming pile of afterbirth...

Why did we let you in again?

You'd get sweaty too if you were supposed to stay 250 feet away from all elementary schools.

Joun, I'm 6'7" 220lbs (though my normal weight is 250lbs, the stress the last few months made me lose weight). Add a 38" inseam and you begin to see the problems. And Segways are like $5000.

The bus makes no sense since I'd have to walk 20 minutes south to the stop, pay $1.50 to take a 70-minute trip around town to be dropped off about a mile east of the pickup stop. Oh, and the bus starts running 5 minutes after I have to be at work.

My feet don't fit on skateboards... and I'm not sure they'd support my weight either. No need to mention my total lack of balance.

I actually have considered doing some pizza delivery with the Scooter to make some cash quick... they pay REALLY well here (minimum wage, tips and a per-delivery fee... most people I've talked to average $15-$20/hr on a slow night and up to $50/hr on peak nights).

The scooter is a good idea.
Also, I have heard really good things about CarMax if there is one close to you.
The problem with getting a $800 junker that will last a couple of months is that it will only last a couple of months. Not only will it make you mis work when it dies (which your boss may not be happy about), but it also costs money to haul away.
I'd say either get the scooter or a '98 honda Civic. At least in the Civic you don't have to worry about rain.

Was '98 arbitrary or does it have some significance that escapes my simple mind?

I bet the bike pedals would hurt your stubs, though. I can never bike barefoot, for example.

Actually, then I'd get disability and wouldn't need to work and they'd probably give me a free Rascal.

You know, I think I like this plan...

Be like former NBA player Bryant Reeves. Buy a car, take out the front seat, and drive from the backseat. He was seven feet tall, and that is what he did. He grew up near my hometown, and was always seen in highschool driving in his car like that.
