Should we do a minecraft let's play?

Post by Blackferne » Wed Mar 05, 2014 7:08 pm

Yesterday I bought minecraft to play with my daughter. She loves that we have a cave house with windows. She likes the torches I set up. Anyway I know other alvians play minecraft from time to time, should we do a friday or saturday minecraft night in the next month? Is there interest in such a thing?

I have a server I run that I'd be happy to let any alvians onto. It's on bukkit and it's pretty stable. It's a co-op server with a few plugins.

The server is at rivendell.cyclometh.com. I set it up originally as a thing for me and my son to play on, then my daughter joined us. It's been languishing a bit lately, but I'd love to breathe some new life into it.

It's whitelisted, so no one can join that I haven't pre-approved. It's on the Bukkit server platform with a few basic plugins that help me admin the thing. There's also some economy plugins, but there haven't been enough players to actually have an economy yet.

Here's the server's website (very minimalist, but has some screenshots): http://rivendell.cyclometh.com

Features:

* Whitelisted, so no griefers. Only people I know personally play.
* Still pretty open and unexplored. After the most recent biome regen updates, I went and nuked all the areas people had explored (mostly me) but no one had built anything in to allow them to regenerate (yay more variety)
* Post office. Everyone gets a secure chest with a hopper to put stuff into so you can leave things for each other offline.
* A "Tough Boats" plugin of my own design to keep boats from breaking if you drive over lily pads.
* Basic economy plugin (Gringotts). With more players we could add more features or take advantage of the ones that exist.
* Mob griefing is off (creepers hurt if they explode, but they don't damage structures).

General gameplay:

* This is a vanilla MC server running on the most recent versions of Bukkit (bukkit.org). We're currently on a version that supports Minecraft 1.7.2 (which should be accessible from a 1.7.5 client).
* Plugins typically only enhance gameplay, like teleportation to home, spawn, points of interest, other players, and so on.
* No PVP unless mutually agreed on.
* No griefing.
* Creeper explosions don't damage blocks. I know that's not really vanilla MC, but it's my least favorite part of Minecraft, so I got rid of it.
* There are some younger players (friends of my son and daughter) who play, so language and behavior has to be appropriate.

I'd be up for something though can't say how long a vanilla or mostly vanilla server would keep my attention since I got sucked into the SIRadio Infinity Zero test server and eventual release. Not that I am trying to push for a more complex server as I would suggest keeping it simpler for the newer and younger audience.

That's fine, it'd be cool to have you anyway. I like vanilla and I want to keep it vanilla survival. I'm hoping to make it a long-term thing; right now there's a town with a tower I've been working on for about a year or so as I have time- all built legit, except for things like spawn and the post office, which I consider metagame support.

If you want on, let me know your MC username and I'll whitelist you. :)

Whitelist Blackferne please!

Tonight my daughter and I will check it out. We just have the basic minecraft haven't done any modding. Do we need to do any tweaks, or just choose version 1.72 when we load in?

Done and done. You don't need any mods, and you should be able to play with version 1.7.5. When you sign in you'll be at the spawn, and there are signs that say to contact me to be added to a builders group, but I've added "Blackferne" to the builders group already. I'll also set you up with a post office box, which is right behind spawn.

Feel free to build near town or head out and do your own thing. I'm trying to keep the town fairly regularly laid out, so pick logical lots to build in if you do, otherwise have fun! The big tower is my house, but you're welcome to use it as a shelter if you want. Not like there's not room!

Edit: added staris also. I'm going to be working all day, but I'll try to hop on this evening and say hello if you're around.

Sounds good. The town, such as it is, is small, but the only really important part is the road layout; I'm trying to keep it at least sort of gridlike for a bit more expansion. It'll be interesting to see it grow.

Also, when I create a mailbox I put some basic tools and some iron armor in it for you, as a way to get started.

For the record...I was on a solid minecraft kick a year or so ago. I had built considerable stuff on my friends' server, then there was an incident involving losing a lot of my stuff (gold, diamonds, etc.) to creepers. I ragequit. The only reason I'd like to get into it again would be to build a proper church so I can worship my Alvis and drink in his name.

Oh, man. That sucks. You should know that mob griefing is turned off on this server, so while creepers WILL damage you, they don't explode blocks.
