My Geekiness knows no bounds!
Just grabbed some of "The New 52" Hardcover Graphic novels from Barnes and Noble at great prices, if anyone is interested (looking at you Dashl). I grabbed Justice League, Batman, and of course, Superman: Action Comics. Best yet, they are Buy 2, Get 1 free AND Free Shipping. I'm excited to read the re-boots. Haven't read a comic in a LONG time!

I read the first 5 or six of each of those, then I got lazy. Probably need to grab those.

Re: My Geekiness knows no bounds!
I went to my local comic shop to get Batman, Superman Action Comics, and Batman and Robin today. Sure I paid more, but I wanted to support the local shop.
I read the entirety of Action Comics Vol 1. Overall seems good. I'm digging Batman a lot more though. The story is really good.

Yeah, I was hoping to get Superman too, but it looks like November. Now I have to wait for delivery...mehDashl wrote:I pickud up Action Comics today. Superman isn't out until later.
Hahah. I ordered Batman, is Batman and Robin worth considering? I haven't read Batman since I was 13, so I have little/no hangups. If the story is good, I may grab it!Blackferne wrote:Finished Batman and Robin last night.

I also supported my local comic shop, and they gave me an armband for the monster sale this weekend, all graphic novels are 25% off, so I will grab the Batman hardcovers. Superman is dated Nov. 14. Action Comics is a year one version of Superman, and Superman starts off 5 years later, as does Justice League. Batman was the only one that the reboot didn't happen to.

Re: My Geekiness knows no bounds!
Batman has a good mystery to it. I was really enjoying it. Batman and Robin is more about the characters. So if you like exploration of character development (I do) it is a good read. If you don't and want more procedural "solve the crime" then just stick with Batman. Robin is pretty dark compared to what I expected (my previous encounters with Robin however were in the movies and tv show).

Nice. I actually prefer character stories, myself. I may have to grab Batman and Robin.Blackferne wrote:Batman has a good mystery to it. I was really enjoying it. Re: My Geekiness knows no bounds!
Read Wonder Woman Vol 1 and Justice League Vol 1 this weekend. I'd recommend both. I was a bit worried not knowing anything about Wonder Woman that it would feel half assed or non compelling, but I found myself really entertained. Justice League lacked some story depth since so much of it was Batman meets Green Lantern. They don't like each other. Oh now Superman is in the picture. That goes poorly, Let's add Flash etc etc etc. Pretty good for an exposition to a series though given you are juggling so many characters.

"A Death of the Family" started across the bat books two weeks ago and is looking amazing so far. The Joker (see: Detective #1) is just unbelievably maniacal this time.

Well I can't just read one comic book like that. I'll just have to wait til Vol 2 is out.

I had the original 4 issue storyline of "A Death in the Family". Sold them to buy a drumset.

Re: My Geekiness knows no bounds!
Since the last update I've read
Superman Vol 1 What price Tomorrow
Green Arrow Vol 1 The Midas Touch
Green Lantern Vol 1 Sinestro
and an older book the Green Arrow Longbow Hunter series.
Superman is good but not great. The story has some confusing twists and turns which only made sense since I had read action comics first. If you like Supes pick it up, if you are on the fence you might want to sit it out.
Green Arrow Vol 1 is mostly action and little exposition. It lacks the story of Wonder Woman or Batman, and didn't have the character development of Batman and Robin. The volume is a little preachy on society's reality show like obsession with violence and the lowest common denominator, and I think they could have done a better job with that if they had pulled some of the action and developed the villains some more.
Green Lantern Vol 1 surprised me because in general I don't much care for GL. But I got it for my brother and he already had it, so I kept it. I found myself really loving the development of Sinestro. I care way more about his situation than Hal Bordem. I'd recommend it for people who like character development and moral dilemma.
Green Arrow Longbow Hunters I picked up because the comic shop said that the writers of Arrow (Dashl and I's favorite new show) have cited this series as a serious influence. The book is very 80s. They talk about crack like it is a super evil drug (not saying it is good, but they get it wrong on some level), they talk about the Iran contra scandal and the AIDS epidemic as well. The piece also has strong antihero influence which I believe was in vogue among comics at the time. I know Punisher was getting big around the time and this was after Batman had gone darker. It was an interesting read, has plenty of adult themes, but in some ways I found it hard to really immerse myself in because of the 20-25 year style difference and because in general it seems that the writing has gotten better for comics. I'd recommend it for Green Arrow fans looking for more takes on the character since it gives him more development than the Midas Touch does. I'd be curious to go re-read the Killing Joke from around the same time to see how it stacks up.
Up next I'm considering Aquaman and Batgirl.

Arrow has surprised me, much better than I thought it would be. If you do want to branch out from superheroes, The Walking Dead is my new favorite comic. I also picked up the Wolverine graphic novel that the new movie is based on.
